
Angoon is a typical southeast Alaska village, rich in wilderness and the cultural heritage of Native people who have occupied the island for over 5,000 years. The people of Angoon rely on ferry and barge transportation for the fossil fuels on which they depend for their energy needs, making the cost of electricity one of the highest in the US. In Angoon the average household pays $0.60 per kilowatt hour, or about $1,200 per month for utility bills. This is 10 times higher than the average electricity rates in the lower 48 States, and is unsustainable for the outlying community, which is under threat of relocation.
For the Sustain Angoon project, Ideal Energy puts renewable energy to work where it’s needed most. Using a demonstration house, we employed weatherization techniques and renewable energy design to create an example of energy independence for this rural community.
